Day 11 of Cross-Country Trip -- It's All East from Here

We did it! We made it as far west as we are going on this trip. And I can honestly say - I CANNOT wait to spend 5 or 6 days driving on I-40 the whole way back cross country!! Let me explain!

We started out this morning driving from St George, UT to Las Vegas, NV. HOORAY - we finally made it out of Utah!! We got to Vegas and went to the Hard Rock Cafe and Casino. We went in with $40 - we came out with $49. Hey - at least we broke even and had enough to get a pin at the cafe!

After a VERY short time in Vegas - and after Daniel & Patrick had a piece of chocolate cake they'd been promised for 3 days but kept missing because they fell asleep too soon - we headed to Death Valley.

We drove through the rest of Nevada and into California. We got to Death Valley and started to drive through til we got to the Visitor Center. We got out and went in the shop - and Daniel & Patrick went wild. They were running all over the place and bouncing off the walls. Luckily there weren't many people there and the rangers knew that the boys just needed a good walk to stretch their legs. So we got the stamp and other stuff and got back in the car to drive to the lowest point in the park. As we're walking to the car Daniel suddenly yells "Hey - how'd he DO that?!" I said "how did who do what?" He points to the car and there sitting beside it is a raven. I CAN say this time - it was NOT the same one!! The boys thought it was the same one - but this one didn't have the same mark and wasn't as big. He also had a friend with him. Although it was a different bird - the fact that another raven had shown up had me and Don looking at each other thinking "are WE crazy or are the birds crazy??"

We went to Badwater - the lowest point in the park - and took some pictures - accompanied by the ravens of course. Then we drove through the rest of the park and out the southern entrance. THEN came the backroads for 2 1/2 hours. Pitch black. No reflectors or guard rails. Narrow roads. Lots of wildlife. Lots of curves. No cell phone service. Don said "I never thought I was afraid of the dark til now." I wasn't scared of the dark or anything in it. However, the thought did cross my mind that if something were to happen we were HOURS from help. MILES AND MILES of NOTHING. Not a gas station - not a house - not a person - for MILES. Almost 100 miles to be exact. It was a little daunting.

We FINALLY made it back to civilization. We are in Barstow, California, where we'll spend a night. Tomorrow is a very relaxed, short drive to Phoenix. I can't believe I'll be there tomorrow!!! Race in 2 days!!! Unreal!

I'm ready for some calm, do-nothing days. I'm traveled out right now. I need these next few days to rejuvenate.
