Cross-Country Trip Day 4
Auntie Emm Auntie Emm - where are you?
That's right - we're in Kansas...
We left Saint Louis this morning and made a quick stop at Ulysses S Grant's historic site. It was the farm of his wife's father and where he lived for a few years before the Civil War. Interesting - sort of. Would I recommend it? Not really. It wasn't a long visit.
We headed out west on I-70... for 247 miles... to Kansas City, MO. We stopped and had lunch at Gate's BBQ. Don liked it. It came highly recommended. Rated one of top 10 BBQ places in Kansas City. All I can say is - if you are a southern gal like me - THAT was NOT BBQ. LOL I'm used to shredded pork or chicken or beef. Not sliced. The sauce was good - and the fries were AWESOME. But it wasn't what I was expecting from a BBQ lunch! It was good - don't get me wrong - just not what I was anticipating.
SO - we finished lunch, stopped in to grab some fruit from a local mart, got back in the car and turned the heat on full blast. It was FREEZING in Kansas City. So much for mid-50s. We headed back to I-70 West - for another 200 miles. We saw LOTS of flat land - lots of cows - and an absolutely beautiful sunset. As I'm typing the sky is just losing the red and turning dark. We're about 1/2 hour away from our hotel in Salina. Then of course we have to go take a dip in the pool and watch the BCS championship game. Tomorrow it's off to Dodge City - with a few stops at national historic sites - and then to Colorado Springs. I can't wait to get there.
OK - off to keep looking for Dorothy, Toto and Aunite Emm. Good night!
I forgot to add... we passed the Custer Museum and Calvary House - and you should have heard the fireworks go off in this car during the debate that caused.... Let's just say I'M NOT A FAN OF CUSTER!
